Star Trek: The Rebootening

Oh New Trek, I love and hate you so much! You're beautifully filmed and filled with explosions and gorgeous people and sly references to TOS and attempts at racial diversity, and your characterizations make no sense and you have plot holes big enough to consume a score of Federation planets and your franchise is kind of actually really predicated on creepy space colonialism.
And the fandom has taken off like -- something that takes off very quickly. I can't think of a metaphor that doesn't have to do with spaceships. There is fiction and meta and wank, and fiction/meta/wank about sexism and racism and homophobia. I'm alternately delighted and appalled. It's very disorienting.
My initial impulse has been to zero in on the Kirk/Spock slash, because in case you haven't been paying attention, I have this thing for epic gay destiny. However, Uhura was completely awesome in the parts she was in (asjadey said, it felt like there was a whole other movie out there somewhere starring Uhura (and her girl posse?) which explained where she was when all the boys were having their "Hells yeah!" moments), and I feel like a complete douche breaking a sweet canon couple in order to take the hot alien from the black woman and give him to the white man. Is this what hypocrisy feels like? Nooo, I want diverse characters! I do! Really! I'll play nicely with them, I swear!*
Clearly the only answer is RPS.** CPine/ZQuinto for mayor 2009!
* Do not take the playful tone as dismissal of the complex race issues in this fandom. I'm actually pretty conflicted as to the morality of my superficial desire for man-on-man action at the expense of a fantastic canon het interracial relationship which not only breaks the classic hero-gets-the-girl formula but is depicted as being the woman's choice instead of being a reward for saving the day.
** I think I've lost my RPS shame. The only reason I'm not posting tons of Merlin RPS all over the place is that my writing is still kind of shit. Seriously, what the fuck happened? I used to cry myself to sleep over the loss of my innocence or whatever. Now I'm all AND THEN THEY HAD KINKY SEX IN THAT FRENCH CASTLE WHERE THEY FILMED THE SHOW. Well, at least I'm not completely morally abhorrent like, I don't know, Perez Hilton or something.

I will brook no Uhura haterade in my ficly pleasures, but I also do not think that Uhura and Spock have to be epic destiny. Heck, these youngins is so young, I have trouble seeing any of them in a lifelong commitment mode anyway (then again, I have a predilection for people who have no business being in love trying to be in love and failing mightily, so we're already parting ways on that score). I think that there's room for an amicable and respectful break-up between the two for the sake of some awesome K/S.
... sudden fic-spiration, though. I definitely want to see what effect Spock Prime has on Uhura's perceptions of Spock and the Kirk/Spock relationship, as well as curiosity about her alterverse!self. You know, it occurs to me that we know a lot about how Kirk's life changed (bye bye, daddy), and there are some good ideas about how Spock's life changed (early Romulan appearance = more Vulcan xenophobia = even more shame for human side; will cite when I find source), but I want more on how McCoy and Uhura's lives are different. That "Two Sides" fic I recced on delicious has really sparked a craving in me. I see some kind of massive family and/or childhood change as well. Something that has made her passion harder and her ambition more insistant.
... Bones has already elbowed his way into being my favourite character (I genuinely do not understand why), but Uhura is fast approaching the same level and I'm kinda starting to wander somewhere in the vicinity of Uhura/McCoy OTP... this makes no sense to me, except in the way that it totally, instinctually does.
I'ma stop rambling in your journal now though. Jeez.

I think that there's room for an amicable and respectful break-up between the two for the sake of some awesome K/S. See, this is what I keep telling myself. And really, even if I decided reading K/S made me a bad person, I'd still read it, because I'm clicking on every New Trek fic I see, regardless of its pairing/rating/summary/kink/plethora of tentacles. It's still new and awesome enough that I can't resist.
If you find Uhura/McCoy fics, POST THEM TO YOUR DELICIOUS, woman! They would put the T in my OTP.
